Teosto distributes EUR 16.7 million to music authors and publishers
Today, on 19 September 2024, Teosto has distributed a total of EUR 16.7 million in royalties to composers, lyricists, arrangers, and music publishers. Of this amount, EUR 6.5 million was distributed to Teosto’s domestic and direct members. In total, more than 6,000 music authors and publishers received royalties in September.
Teosto distributes royalties to its members four times a year. The royalties in this distribution were collected mainly during the first quarter of 2024 for music used in concerts, on radio and television, as background music, in online and streaming services, and in Yle Areena and the Nelonen Ruutu+/Ruutu services.
The amount distributed to an individual author may range from a few euros to thousands of euros, depending on how many times their work has been performed and their share of the work. In this distribution, the median amount distributed to a single music author was about EUR 98.

September 2024 distribution is EUR 1.7 million larger compared to last year
In particular, royalties in the radio and TV category have grown, and the September distribution in this category is EUR 0.8 million larger than year’s. The increase can be seen in both Yle and commercial operators, as well as in their additional online services. Part of the increase is due to the distribution of royalties for MTV channels’ advertisements from November–December 2023 and the equalisation distribution of the MTV main channel for 2023 being postponed from June to September.
The increase in the total distribution is partly explained by the larger distribution amount from Video on Demand services. The royalties from the Disney+ service for 2023 will be distributed already in September; royalties for 2022 were not distributed until December 2023. The Video on Demand services distribution is now EUR 1 million larger than in the previous year’s September distribution.
September 2024 distribution royalties have been collected for the following categories of rights:

The total amount distributed by Teosto varies, depending on how comprehensively royalties can be collected in each music use category, and how quickly these can be allocated to the work to which they belong. Allocating the royalties requires work notifications submitted by music authors to Teosto for their own work as well as performance notifications or music use reports submitted by music performers and users.
