Teosto explores Responsible AI Framework and Music Rights Protection in a pilot with Copyright Delta

27.03.2025

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape creative industries, it is vital to build mutually beneficial systems to protect and compensate human creators, while also opening new opportunities for monetization. To address this, Teosto, the Finnish music copyright organization, is participating in a pilot initiative to explore the possibilities of Copyright Delta’s copyright clearance portal to facilitate compliant use of music for AI companies.

This collaborative effort aims to ensure fair compensation for creators while promoting transparency and accountability in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

The pilot includes a set of the most popular Teosto works, linked to international identifiers and online platforms, such as YouTube and Spotify. The portal will allow AI operators to check if the music they use to train their AI models is represented by Teosto, and if so, they can initiate licensing negotiations to ensure copyright compliance.

“Through this collaboration with Copyright Delta and participation in their clearance portal, we are helping to provide a practical, accessible tool for AI companies to ensure they are using music legally”, says Teosto Senior Advisor Ano Sirppiniemi.

“The pilot initiative is about exploring ways to safeguard music rights and also looking into ways of opening potential new pathways to license music for AI companies in a compliant and responsible manner.”

“Teosto calls on AI platforms to act responsibly and commit to respecting copyright and fostering a transparent, legal music ecosystem ensuring fair compensation for creators”, said Teosto’s Chief Legal Officer Jenni Kyntölä.

Teosto’s music authors consider that agreeing about the use and compensation of their works in AI platforms is crucial. In a recent Teosto survey of music creators, 94% believed that permission must be requested from copyright holders before their works are used in AI systems. Only 4% of music creators would be willing to grant their music for AI use without specific conditions.

Teosto is committed to working with AI companies to ensure a fair, transparent, and legally compliant future for the use of music in AI applications. This partnership with Copyright Delta is an important step towards creating a balanced, sustainable ecosystem where both rights holders and technology innovators can thrive together.

Daan Archer, CEO of Copyright Delta, said: “We are very grateful for Teosto’s participation in piloting the portal, as their support and partnership, along with other societies, is crucial in creating responsible AI-driven music ecosystems. This collaboration helps safeguard intellectual property and ensures that creators can thrive in our evolving digital, virtual, and AI-driven worlds.”

Teosto’s participation in the pilot will initially last for six months, after which decisions will be made regarding the potential broader adoption of the service.
